Paper tape vs polypropylene tape

4 min readBuying guide

Short answer

Polypropylene tape is the cheapest per metre and works on any dispenser. Paper tape is kerbside recyclable with the box and gives a tamper-evident seal, and water-activated gummed paper tape bonds into the fibre for the strongest closure on heavy cartons.

Choosing by the job

  • High-volume light cartons: polypropylene, low noise grade if the packing bench is manned all day.
  • Retail or brand-facing packs: printed paper tape, which also reinforces the plastic-free message.
  • Heavy or valuable goods: gummed paper tape, because it cannot be peeled and re-laid unnoticed.
  • Cold or damp stores: check the adhesive grade, as standard acrylic loses tack below about 5°C.

A common false economy

Thin, cheap tape often needs three passes instead of one, so the cost per carton ends up higher than a better grade used once. We will work out cost per box rather than cost per roll if you tell us how you are sealing today.
