Our commitment to sustainability

At Barton Jones Packaging, we recognise our responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and the packaging solutions we supply.

We continually look for practical ways to reduce our carbon footprint, improve efficiency, minimise waste and help our customers make more sustainable packaging choices.

We understand that environmental considerations must be balanced with performance, practicality and cost. Our aim is therefore to work with customers to identify packaging solutions that reduce environmental impact without compromising the protection of their products or the efficiency of their supply chain.

Our buildings

Energy efficiency is an important part of reducing the environmental impact of our day-to-day operations.

Low-energy LED lighting is installed throughout our offices and production facilities. Our warehouse also uses PIR-controlled LED lighting, helping to ensure that lighting is only used when and where it is required.

We will continue to identify opportunities to improve the energy efficiency of our premises and operations.

Our vehicles

We are progressively reducing emissions associated with our company vehicle fleet.

Our sales team currently operates electric vehicles, and our objective is to transition our remaining passenger vehicles to fully electric alternatives as existing leases come to an end.

For our commercial vehicle fleet, we continue to monitor developments in electric and alternative-fuel technology. We will adopt suitable alternatives when they can provide the range, payload and operational reliability required to maintain the level of service our customers expect.

Energy-efficient manufacturing

We continue to invest in modern manufacturing technology designed to improve productivity, material utilisation and energy efficiency.

Our machinery enables us to manufacture packaging efficiently while helping to minimise material waste. As technology develops, we will continue to review and invest in equipment that can further improve the efficiency and environmental performance of our manufacturing operations.

Our carbon footprint

We calculate the carbon footprint associated with our business operations and review this annually.

To address emissions that we currently cannot eliminate, we purchase carbon offsets equivalent to 150% of our calculated operational CO₂ emissions through projects verified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS).

We deliberately offset more than our calculated operational emissions while continuing to focus on reducing emissions at source through energy efficiency, improved processes, modern machinery and the transition towards lower-emission transport.

Our approach is simple: measure, reduce, review and offset.

Waste, recycling & the circular economy

Corrugated packaging is ideally suited to a circular approach because the material can be recovered and recycled to produce new paper and board products.

Approximately 75% of the fibre content of the corrugated material we supply is recycled material, with the corrugated packaging itself being recyclable through established paper and cardboard recycling streams.*

All corrugated manufacturing waste generated within our own production operation is segregated and collected for recycling, allowing the material to be returned to the paper and corrugated recycling process.

We also work to minimise waste at the design stage by considering board grades, dimensions and packaging construction so that customers use an appropriate amount of material for the application.

Barton Jones Packaging complies with its applicable obligations under current UK packaging and producer-responsibility legislation, including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging.

Helping our customers reduce packaging

Increasingly, customers are asking us to help reduce the environmental impact of their packaging.

This can include:

  • replacing plastic components with fibre-based alternatives
  • reducing unnecessary packaging
  • reducing the amount of material used
  • improving recyclability
  • simplifying packaging for easier disposal and recycling
  • redesigning packs to use space and materials more efficiently
  • selecting responsibly sourced corrugated materials
  • designing packaging that provides the required protection with less material

Because we manufacture packaging ourselves as well as sourcing a broad range of packaging products, we can consider the complete packaging solution rather than simply replacing one product with another.
