BRCGS Packaging Compliance Checklist

Compliance 6 min read

A practical checklist for buyers who need audit-ready packaging: supplier approval, traceability, storage conditions, documentation and what auditors actually ask for.

If you are audited, your packaging supply chain is part of the scope. This checklist covers what to have in place and what evidence auditors typically want to see.

Supplier approval

  • Current certificate on file, with scope and expiry date checked.
  • Approved supplier list, reviewed at a stated frequency.
  • Specification agreed in writing for every packaging line.
  • Non-conformance and complaint process documented on both sides.

Traceability

  • Batch or delivery references recorded on goods-in.
  • Ability to trace a delivered pallet back to production.
  • Mock recall exercise carried out and recorded.
  • FSC or chain of custody claims supported by licence codes on invoices.

Storage and handling

  • Packaging stored clean, dry and off the floor.
  • Segregation from chemicals, waste and strong odours.
  • Pest control regime in place and monitored.
  • Stock rotation so older material is used first.

Documentation to keep to hand

  • Certificates of conformity where food contact is claimed.
  • Technical data sheets for board grades and films.
  • Declaration for recycled content or plastic tax where relevant.
  • EPR data: weight by material, per packaging line.
