Packaging for food

4 min readSector guide

Short answer

Food packaging decisions come down to three things: whether the material is suitable for direct or indirect food contact, whether it survives chilled and humid conditions, and whether your supplier can evidence hygienic storage and traceability. We hold BRCGS Storage & Distribution certification for exactly this.

Direct vs indirect contact

Direct contact materials touch the food and need documented food-contact suitability. Indirect contact, such as an outer shipping box around sealed products, has lighter requirements but still needs clean, controlled storage and traceability.

Chilled and humid conditions

  • Standard corrugated loses compression strength as moisture content rises, so chilled stores need a higher grade or a treated board.
  • Water-resistant coatings and liners are available for wet or iced products.
  • Insulated liners and thermal boxes cover short-duration chilled distribution.
  • Keep pallet loads square, because damp board plus overhang is the usual cause of collapsed stacks in cold stores.

Shelf-ready and retail boxes

Retail customers usually specify shelf-ready packaging with a defined perforation, print area and box count. We make trays, wraps and shelf-ready boxes to spec and can hold call-off stock so you are not tied to one big run.

Frequently asked questions

Is your packaging suitable for food?
We supply food-suitable materials and store all stock in a BRCGS-certificated facility. We will confirm food-contact suitability for the specific material you need.
Can you supply shelf-ready packaging?
Yes, trays, wraps and shelf-ready boxes made to retailer specification.
Do you supply chilled distribution packaging?
Yes, including insulated liners, thermal boxes and moisture-resistant board options.

Think your packaging is bigger than it needs to be?

Send us your product dimensions and we’ll come back with a right-sized option. There is no minimum on stock lines, and bespoke corrugated runs can start from as little as one, but we will advise the most cost efficient run rate depending on size and board grade.
