The problem

What usually goes wrong

Machined and cast components are dense. A small box can hit 25kg, which puts a board grade under far more stress than its size suggests.

Parts are also sharp, oily and often finished to a tolerance that a single knock ruins. Loose parts in a box abrade each other and arrive scratched, burred or corroded.

On top of that, goods-in at the customer end needs to count what arrived without unpacking everything, and production needs the pack to feed the line rather than fight it.

Materials

  • Uprated single wall for small, dense packs up to around 25kg
  • BC double wall for 25kg to 40kg and anything stacked on a pallet
  • Triple wall for castings, housings and heavy assemblies
  • Closed-cell and U-profile foam for machined and coated surfaces
  • Kraft, imitation and corrugated papers for interleaving oily components

Real example

Cutting damage on a machined-part despatch

An engineering customer was shipping machined housings loose in a double wall box with paper void fill. Parts rubbed together in transit and around one in ten arrived with surface marks that failed inspection.

We designed a die-cut corrugated tray with individual cells, sat inside an uprated double wall box, and supplied it assembled so the packer simply drops parts in.

Rejections on arrival effectively stopped, and because the tray fixes the pack pattern, goods-in at the customer can count a full box at a glance.
