The problem

What usually goes wrong

In a regulated supply chain, the packaging is part of the product file. Where it was made, how it was stored and who handled it all have to be evidenced, not assumed.

General packaging merchants often cannot answer those questions. Stock sits in shared, uncontrolled space and the audit trail stops at the invoice.

There is also a change-control problem: a supplier quietly switching board spec or liner between orders is a deviation you have to investigate.

Packaging components we usually specify

  • Bespoke outer boxes and shippers to a fixed, documented specification
  • Die-cut inserts and partitions to fix product position within the pack
  • Foam inserts for devices, instruments and fragile primary packs
  • Tamper-evident tape and security sealing options
  • Polythene liners, bags and layflat tubing where an inner barrier is specified
  • Pallets, stretch film and strapping for controlled despatch

  • Documented board grades held to spec order after order, with change control on any variation
  • B, C and BC grades selected on tested performance rather than availability
  • Clean white top liners where presentation or labelling requires it
  • Closed-cell foam and U-profile for device and instrument protection
  • FSC certified board under licence C214479 where chain of custody is claimed

Real example

Closing an audit gap on packaging storage

A medical supplies customer failed a supplier audit question on packaging storage: their previous merchant held stock in shared, uncertified warehousing and could not provide records.

We took the held stock into our BRCGS Storage & Distribution certified premises, fixed the box specification in writing with a retained sample, and set up call-off with traceable records for every movement.

The gap closed at the next audit, and because the specification is now controlled, board changes cannot happen without a documented approval.
